What would you pair rice with? From Dal & Ghee To Avocado, Netizens Have Global Answers

The netizens have suggested their favorite pairings for rice.

Although some of the answers may sound familiar, they quickly become exotic.

Rice is a staple food around the globe. A plate of rice is a staple food for almost half the world’s population, from India to Japan to Bangladesh to Brazil. But do all people eat rice the same way? It turns out that the answer is no. It was all put into perspective by a meme question and the various responses.

Rice is believed to have been first harvested approximately 10,000 years ago. It now provides about 1/5 of the daily human calorific requirements. Rice is so ubiquitous that it can be eaten in hundreds of different ways. It can be boiled and steamed for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or processed in many ways to make snacks. Rice can be used as a base or pairing for many delicious dishes.

What do you think would pair well with rice?

A viral meme on Instagram shows how many conversations can be started by asking a simple question about rice. It features a plain plate of rice with the simple question: “You can add two things to this simple rice plate, name them.”

The answers to this question would have been quite interesting if it had been restricted to Indians. It also allows us to see what else we might be missing by extending it to other countries.

From ‘Daal and Ghee to ‘Meatballs and Cheese,’ this is how the world eats its rice

Devyani Kulkarni is a person who seems to be from these parts. However, it doesn’t take long for things to get exotic. Kaycreative prefers ‘Soy sauce with veggies’. The account _shraddhaa adds an Indian touch to the mix, suggesting dal and adding chicken. Her preference is for yellow dal and butter chicken.

Very quickly, matters escalate. The next three responses are ‘Teriyaki Sauce, steamed broccoli’ and ‘fried egg, soy sauce’. This suggests a south-east Asian slant. Each answer gets its own reaction. Next up is a south american option – ‘Fried eggs, beans’. This is followed by a joke (? ): “Ketchup and Air”.

Next up is a humble ‘Salt & Butter’ option that one might think would go better with popcorn. Then comes the delicious sounding sambhar +fish fry’ and Ghee Podi’. The avocado is a millennial favorite. One person suggests avocado and lime (with a heart-eyed Emoji), while another suggests some seaweed and avocado, before things return to the subcontinent with “rice + curd”.

These are just a few more ideas that might interest you:

  • “Okra and shrimp”
  • ‘Chicken and honey garlic sauce’
  • ‘Rajma(red kidney beans)’
  • “Tuna and tomato”
  • “Mango and coconut milk”
  • “Tofu and a mix of vegetables”
  • ‘Butter and cinnamon sugar
  • “Banana and cinnamon”
  • “Beans and Kale”
  • “Fish and garlic”
  • “Meatballs and cheese”
  • “Mango and sweet coconut syrup”
